Play Group and Kindergarten

Imitation and Play

In Playgroup and Kindergarten children are still very much in a dream state. It is all about discovering and learning about the world around them and they do this through playing and imitation. It is said that playing is the work of the small child.

Small children experience the environment around them with their senses. The Kindergarten is wonderland of discovery with wonderful smells and sensory rich surfaces for little children exploring and getting to know the world. All toys and objects are made from natural things for instance natural fibers like wool, wooden blocks, handmade dolls and so on. Besides the fact that it expands the children's sensory experience, it also naturally develops their imagination. For instance the wooden blocks can become cars, bricks or anything in the imagination of the child during free play. Imagination is very important in dealing with problem solving and creative work later in life. This is why Waldorf Education lays much emphasis on its development. It was Einstein that said that imagination is more important than knowledge.

The Kindergarten is a warm, nurturing and safe environment - a home away from home. The teacher gently guides the children rhythmically through each day providing a sense of security and purpose. Each day begins with circle time where children recite and learn beautiful verses and gentle songs to ease them into their daily rhythm. Here they develop their speech, singing, vocabulary and an appreciation for beauty and goodness. Story-time is an important part of the day. Each day the children receive a story with an underlying lesson about life and moral behavior. It develops their listening, concentration as well as their memory skills. It also expands their emotional experience and instills a sense of what is right and wrong.

Other inside activities include painting, baking, braiding, needle work, tying their shoe laces, cutting and pasting, as well as seasonal festival handwork. It all serves to develop fine motor skills. Music also plays an important role and they are introduced to the pure sound of a pentatonic lyre played beautifully by the teacher. Each day has a period of free play. When free play is inside, children can explore social interactions, do puzzles, build with wooden blocks, dress up, play with dolls or make up their own games.

There is a beautiful garden with a lovely tree just outside the Kindergarten where the children love to play during 'outside time'. There are also jungle gym and a sandpit. It is here where the children get a chance to develop their gross motor skills and they do so with great enthusiasm. Great housing and dam projects are planned and executed in the sandpit. The lovely old tree always have some children sitting on the low hanging branches, imagining and talking about magical adventures. The jungle gym is a place for practicing and showing off balancing and climbing skills. Games are invented and played with great seriousness. Important social skills are learned. Imagination is developed. Exactly what little children needs to do for optimum development.

Because of this child centered approach Waldorf children naturally love to go to school. When the time arrive for them to go to Grade one they are ready with lively imaginations and a love for learning.
