Waldorf Education
Early History
Rudolf Steiner
Rudolf Steiner was a visionary 20th century philosopher and scientist who founded Anthroposophy - a system of inner development for the human being as a spiritual being living a physical existence. He wrote extensively on many aspects of life and laid out a path of education to enable children to become their true selves and to function as a force for good in this world.
The first school based upon the ideas of Rudolf Steiner was opened in 1919 in response to a request from Emil Molt, the owner and managing director of the Waldorf-Astoria Cigarette Company in Stuttgart, Germany. It is from here that the name Waldorf originates and the name is today widely associated with Waldorf Education. The seeds planted by Rudolf Steiner soon took root in the student's hearts and some became of the most influential people in the 20th century.
Waldorf Education grew steadily and became a movement that today spans the globe. It's extraordinary educational methods have guided and helped millions of children to become creative and imaginative adults able to find their place in the world and to exercise a positive influence in their community.
